A Terraced Section of the Road Looking West

© Kanovium Project

A fine west view of the ancient trackway, the road is terraced in to the hillside, centre of image is the mountain Llwytmor, while Aber Falls are far beneath right.  The track here while not classic Roman road certainly exhibits Roman features.  The terrace is very distinctive, and it is just possible to detect alignment methods of the Romans in a couple of stretches here, also some culverts and side ditch, still quite deep and sharp, always on the south, upward slope.  The sharpness of the ditch section could represent latter recutting.   Seen on this image are slight cobbling of the surface, but there is also some modern grave presentl.  The Romans would certainly have used gravel too, but it is unlikely to still remain, quarried from nearby Tal-y-Cafn, it will have long since been washed away by rain and winter floods and often what we are looking at is the road bed of the much earlier track(s) with modern gravel repairs.  This section has wheel ruts worn into the surface, making it look like a farm track, used by modern liesure and farm vehicles. Ignore this fine view, keep on east and you will see the next section.
